You may also ask if your real estate agent has advanced training, certifications, or specialties he or she can share. Answers to these questions can tell you quite a bit about an agent’s experience and expertise.
- For how long have you sold houses in this area?
Knowing the neighborhoods, schools and amenities of the area where you want to buy or sell is an important advantage and not information you can always discern from a quick Internet search. If your REALTOR® lives in or formerly lived in the area, that can be a bonus, too.
- How many houses did you buy or sell in the past year?
Get an idea of what kind of volume of transactions the real estate agent you are interviewing is accustomed to. Do they complete so many transactions that personal attention is difficult or do they have a good handle on their residential real estate market and limit their clientele in order to provide the highest level of personal service?
- What is your commission?
There is a great deal of variability with real estate commissions. Ask so you know what fees will be required before you hire an agent or broker to represent you.
- If I were to work with you, how would you market my house or help me find a home?
Ask for an idea upfront of how a potential real estate agent may approach helping you locate a home to purchase or prepare your home for sale. Are you comfortable with what you learn? Does is differ from what you expect? How open are they to your ideas and feedback?
- Will you organize meetings with potential buyers/ sellers and will you coordinate them personally?
Learn who will personally handle the details for your home search and purchase and/or marketing and selling your property. Will it be a senior member of the REALTORS® team or an associate? How will the team you select guide you through the home-selling or home-buying process?
- Can you give me names and telephone numbers of other families who have used your services?
